The  UKZN Drama department in Pietermaritzburg hosted  a mini drama festival during the  weekend of the 24th  of March. The festival consisted of a series of plays which were performed at the hexagon theatre.  On Friday theatre lovers were treated to a night exclusively dedicated to comdey. The unconventional opening play titled Crush Hopper was by Mandisa Harholf, a master’s drama student, The play was a cleverly produced  biography, about growing up in a society where the protagonist did not understand her own identity, and she lived in her own faulty world where she was absolutely convinced she was a white person. The play was a combination of poetry, music and dark humour, and it  was a absolutely perfect way to start a festival and ever so delightful to watch.

Cage Fighter, performed byRyan Mayne a  honour’s graduate, was  a very funny recall of a night out with 20  witty characters, all performed by Ryan himself. The play combined dance and music, the play evolved into a very romantic story. On Saturday, theatre lovers returned to  a play called Paper Boy performed by Grant Jacobs. The play, true to theme, was a comedy. It was  about a paper boy who had dreams of becoming a famous actor , but who was stuck in his  hometown where everyone’s affairs is public whether they prefer it that way or not.other performances included  Bush To Country performed by Arifani Moyo , who  took the audience on an emotional journey detailing  the history of Zimbabwe.  He reconstructed Southern Africa like we have never seen before, a rich history of Zimbabwe dating back to the 1600’s,at the end of the play he stood under the spotlight and shed a tear, some of the audience members were overwhelmed by their own tears, I must admit I had tears in my eyes too.  The festival was truly exiting. Majority of the people who were there say they don’t regret paying and attending the festival and given the chance they would do it all over again.
